Research Environment

Our Environment

The University of Utah School of Dentistry provides a unique environment for oral health research and workforce development. Our school’s large clinical enterprise is embedded in a major healthcare system. We are leaders in medical-dental integration, with four of our eight clinics offering dental care alongside medical and behavioral health care and using the same electronic health record. A founding pillar of our school is to advance oral health at the population scale, especially for underserved people and our local communities.

Because we are embedded in a top-tier research university, we also have exceptional opportunities to improve oral health by collaborating across disciplines as diverse as materials science, biomedical engineering, data science, imaging, and the life sciences.

Our Clinical Enterprise

University of Utah Health

The School of Dentistry is part of the University of Utah system of hospitals and clinics, with a catchment area encompassing more than 10% of the continental US, over 25 million people , and six states. Collaborators within our health system include Huntsman Mental Health Institute, Huntsman Cancer Institute, the University of Utah Hospital, and the Rose Park Population Health Center.

Integrated Care

17 percent of our dental visits occur at one of four integrated clinics, where we provide dental care alongside primary medical care, behavioral health care, and other services. Integrated care across University of Utah Health system is possible because of our shared electronic health record (Epic).

Community Partnerships

7/10 of our clinics partner with local community organizations to increase access and utilization of oral health care for those in need.

Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

We are bringing oral health to a department near you! We are leveraging the exceptional resources and collaborative research environment at University of Utah to launch new oral health research across the translational spectrum and across disciplines as diverse as digital health, diabetes & metabolism, materials science, biomedical innovation, data science, imaging, and the life sciences.
