The University of Utah School of Dentistry is proud to foster dental education and recognize the academic achievements, community and University involvement, and outstanding potential of students by offering a number of scholarships to qualified candidates each year. The generosity of community members, faculty, staff, parents, friends, corporations, and foundations allows the University of Utah School of Dentistry to provide meaningful financial support to our students.

The School of Dentistry currently offers 12 scholarships totaling more than $20,000, available to both incoming and current students for the 2018-2019 Academic Year. 

Application deadline for the Educational Resource Development Council (ERDC) Scholarship is February 2, 2018.

Application deadline for all other scholarships is May 15, 2018.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
*This is required for all need-based scholarships within the University of Utah. Students are not required to accept federal financial aid, but scholarship applicants who do not complete the FAFSA will not be considered for any need-based awards.

John Erickson Memorial Annual Scholarship One $1,500

One $1,500 scholarship will be awarded.
Open to students who have completed at least one year of studies at the School of Dentistry.
Applicant must:
1) Have demonstrated high academic standards.
2) Have demonstrated financial need. Financial need is demonstrated by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
3) Have demonstrated the ability to overcome life challenges.

Jay A. & Susan G. Aldous Annual Scholarship One $2,000 One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded.
Applicant must:
1) Have demonstrated high academic standards.
2) Have demonstrated financial need. Financial need is demonstrated by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Jay A. Aldous Endowed Scholarship One $1,000

An endowed scholarship established in 2017 by Dr. Craig Proctor to honor Dr. Jay Aldous for the many contributions that Dr. Aldous has made to dentistry at the University of Utah and in the State of Utah. This award is established to bring continued recognition to Dr. Aldous for years to come. Those recipients of this award are encouraged, when they are able, to give back to the scholarship so that its benefits to others may grow over time.
One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.
Available to all School of Dentistry students.

Grant B. & Susan S. Cannon Annual Scholarship One $1,000 Applicant must:
1) Have demonstrated high academic standards.
2) Have demonstrated financial need. Financial need is demonstrated by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Marian W. Ingham Endowed Scholarship One $1,000 An endowed scholarship established in 2017 by Marian W. Ingham in appreciation for the wonderful work that the School of Dentistry provides to the community. Marian has demonstrated a belief in education and the important nature of the journey that students go through on their course to becoming professionals. It is her desire that this scholarship benefit those who will continue to be a force for good in the community.
One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.
Available to all School of Dentistry students.
Mark & Mary Jane Taylor Annual Scholarship One $5,000 One $5,000 scholarship will be awarded.
Available to all School of Dentistry students.
Applicant must:
1) Be in good academic standing at the School of Dentistry.
Robert W. Hymes Periodontal Endowed Scholarship One $1,000

A scholarship fund was established in 2015 by Robert W. Hymes for students within the School of Dentistry who are pursuing a graduate degree in periodontics.  Those students who have received assistance from the scholarship are encouraged, when and if they are financially capable (preferably within ten years of graduation), to reimburse the scholarship fund in an amount at least equal to that which they have received, in order that future students may have the opportunity to received assistance from the scholarship fund.

One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.
Open to students who are pursuing periodontics.
Applicant must:
1) Have demonstrated that he/she is persuing a specialty program in periodontics.

Dr. Richard D. & Terina Newman Martinez Endowed Scholarship One $2,000

A scholarship fund was established in 2016 by Richard and Terina Martinez to support students in their 2nd or 3rd year in the School of Dentistry, carrying a minimum of a 3.5 GPA, demonstrating an interest in general dentistry, and involvement in school and community activities.  Those students who have received assistance from the scholarship fund are encouraged, when and if they are financially capable (preferably within ten years of graduation), to reimburse the scholarship fund in an amount at least equal to that which they have received, in order that future students may have the opportunity to receive assistance from the scholarship fund.

One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded.
Open to students who are in their 2nd or 3rd year of dental school upon receipt of the award.
Applicant must:
1) Be in their 1st or 2nd year of dental school at the time of the application.
2) Have a minimum of a 3.5 GPA in dental school.
3) Have demonstrated an interest in general dentistry.
4) Have demonstrated involvement in school and community activities.

Dr. Reed P. Larson Legacy Scholarship One $1,000

A scholarship fund was established in 2001 by Lennox A. Larson in honor of Dr. Reed P. Larson for students within the School of Medicine's joint program with Creighton University School of Dentistry, and as of 2012, the University of Utah School of Dentistry. Preference shall be given to outstanding students entering or within the University of Utah School of Dentistry. Those students who have received assistance from the scholarship fund are encouraged, when and if they are financially capable (preferably within ten years of graduation), to reimburse the scholarship fund in an amount at least equal to that which they have received, in order that future students may have the opportunity to receive assistance from the scholarship fund.
One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.
Available to all School of Dentistry students.
Applicant must:
1) Be a student who has demonstrated outstanding merit.

Reed A. Holdaway Endowed Scholarship One $1,000

An endowed scholarship established in 2017 by Dr. Richard and Frances Reiser. Dr. Reiser was mentored by Dr. Holdaway in Orthodontics and practiced orthodontic dentistry for many years in Utah. The Reisers have graciously established this endowed scholarship to honor the professional contributions of Dr. Holdaway with the hope that Dr. Holdaway's legacy will carry on in the years to come.
One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded.
Available to all School of Dentistry students.
Applicant must:
1) Be a student who has demonstrated outstanding merit.

Dan J. Swindle Memorial Scholarship Two $2,000

Scholarship support shall be awarded to deserving students based on financial need and academic excellence. Priority shall be given to outstanding students entering the School of Dentistry. Those students who receive assistance are encouraged, when and if they are financially able (preferably within ten years), to reimburse the fund an amount at least equivalent to that which they received.
Two $2,000 scholarships will be awarded.
Available to all School of Dentistry students.
Applicant must:
1) Have demonstrated high academic standards.
2) Have demonstrated financial need. Financial need is demonstrated by completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Educational Resource Development Council (ERDC) Scholarship Varies

The University of Utah Educational Resource Development Council will award scholarships to deserving students from the School of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Health, College of Pharmacy, and School of Dentistry who have demonstrated excellence in their field, and who have financial need. Diversity will also be emphasized. The number and amount of the scholarships has yet to be determined.
Applicant must:
1) Maintain a 3.5 GPA
2) Be a full-time declared major in one of the above-mentioned Colleges or Schools whose field of study has an emphasis on diversity.
3) Be a prospective junior, senior, or graduate student
